Cherry stands left, Rose poses right,

With smiles they look so bright.

Everyone says, they would be cuter,

Even forty years later.

P.S. They are 4, and their mom is 4*10. Their dad is just a litter bit cuter. ;)

Notes from Cherry’s teacher Mrs. Ivany

Sept. 21 Monday

Happy Monday to everyone!

Today we learned a song for the days of the week (below) and began our unit on safety.  We talked about the school bus and the safety rules we need to remember when on/near the bus (sit down with your back against the seat, wait your turn to get on/off the bus, do not run around near the bus stop...).  We discovered that only 4 of our friends come to school on the bus!  We sang "Wheels on the Bus", read two school bus stories, then each of us made our own yellow bus which is coming home in mailbags today.

Days of the Week song:

"There are 7 days in a week, 7 days in a week,

7 days in a week, I'll tell you what they are.

There's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sa-tur-day!!"

Have a great day,

Sept. 22 Tuesday

Today we talked about traffic lights and the meanings of the different coloured lights.  We learned a little poem to help us remember:

"Red says STOP

Green says GO

Yellow says WAIT,

Even if you're late!"

Then, each of us made our own traffic light which will come home soon.

We read "How Do Dinosaurs go to School?".  Many of us knew that dinosaurs and people never lived at the same time. We are getting quite good at recognizing question marks. Maybe your child can point one out to you!

One of our friends has lost his snack container and we are thinking it travelled home with someone else by mistake.  It is an oval-shaped stainless steel container.  If you happen to have it at your house, please send it back with your child and we'll reunite it with it's owner!

Thanks,

PS. Thanks for your message.  The boy with the birthday was Cameron.

I will soon be circulating a class photo/name book.  You'll be able to see all her friends in the class at that time.

Thanks,

Sept. 23 Wednesday

Today we talked about the arrival of fall and the changes we can expect to see/feel (cooler weather, leaves falling, leaves changing colours, raking and jumping in leaves...).

Then we got right back to our safety theme and talked about safety rules for playing outside.  Huggles(our class bear) had his own bike helmet to teach us how to wear our helmets properly.  We played a game to match pictures to safety rules. Here are the rules:

* I always wear a helmet when I ride my bike

* I never ride my bike in the dark

* I stop at the corner and cross the street with a grown-up

* If my ball rolls onto the street, I get a grown-up to help me

* I know what a STOP sign looks like and what it means

The children were given the choice to decorate a paper bike helmet (optional activity). Tomorrow we will discuss the "never talk to strangers" rule as well as fire safety.

We read "Wheels on the Bus" and then acted it out with each of us playing a part in the book. We did many finger plays, danced the Hokey Pokey, and recited our  stop-light poem.

Enjoy the rest of your day,

Sept. 24 Thursday

Good afternoon!

Today we talked about fire safety and focused on "Stop, Drop, and Roll" (in the unlikely event that our clothes catch on fire).  We read a book about fire safety, sang a song about stop, drop, and roll, then each child met with me in a small group to practice. We learned that we should have working smoke alarms in our houses as well as an escape plan in case of a fire.  (Homework for mommies and daddies!)

We also read a book called "Never Talk to Strangers".  We discussed what a "stranger" is and that if a stranger tries to talk us, we do not answer - we run to mommy and daddy or the adult that is with us.

A note about our alphabet programme is coming home in mailbags today.  Please see the list of upcoming events below.

Have a good day,

Elizabeth

Coming up:

Monday Sept. 28 - our alphabet programme begins

Thursday October 8 - Kindergarten Curriculum Night - Come and hear about the expectations of the Kindergarten programme. More details to follow

Friday October 9 - Professional Activity Day for teachers - NO SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN

Monday October 12 - Thanksgiving - Schools closed

Sept. 25 Friday

Today we reviewed all the safety rules we learned this week and then made a class book about safety.  Each child drew a picture to illustrate the rule of their choice.  Then we put them all together to make our first book!!  Soon, this book will make it's way to your house as each child will be allowed  "one sleep" with our book.

At storytime, we read our class safety book then I told them "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" story with puppets.  We also read one of my favourite stories, "Once Upon a Golden Apple".  Of course, we did lots of little songs, poems, and finger plays.

Our alphabet programme begins on Monday - letter A.  Please refer to the handout sent home yesterday.

Enjoy your weekend.  The Carp Fair is on this weekend. Maybe we'll see some of you there!

Sept. 30 Wednesday

Firstly, an apology that the class phone list was not sent home today as promised.  It will be coming home tomorrow.

We had a very busy afternoon!  We spent most of the day talking about names.  We played several "name" games including: trying to guess the mystery name on the board (kind of like "hang-man" - the answer was "Huggles");  guessing the name of a friend by following some verbal clues ("I'm thinking of a girl in our class who is wearing stripes"); and, "Who's missing?", we have to guess the name of the friend that has secretly left the circle when our eyes were closed (while, when our eyes were "somewhat" closed!!!). We also sang a version of "Do you know the Muffin Man?" using our friends' names.

We read, "Chrysanthemum" and agreed that it is never nice to tease.

We are also all working on finger painting our names.  About half the class finished today.  The others will finish tomorrow.

Our class safety book has started making its rounds to homes.  With 19 children in the class, it could take several days to make it to your house.  But, it will be worth the wait!!!

Have a good evening,

Elizabeth

Coming Up:

Thursday October 8 - Kindergarten Curriculum Night - Come and hear about the expectations of the Kindergarten programme. More details to follow

Friday October 9 - Professional Activity Day for teachers - NO SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN

Monday October 12 - Thanksgiving - Schools closed

Wed. October 28 - Photo Day

Oct. 1st Thursday

We had another busy day  We talked about it being the first day of October then I showed them our classroom calendar.  We noticed all the special days coming up in October  (Thanksgiving, PA Day, birthdays, Halloween!!) then we sang a "months-of-the-year"  song:

"January, February, March and April

May, June, July and August

September, October, November, December

Twelve months in a year".

In small groups, I showed them the "Starfall" programme on the computer.  This is a fabulous programme that assists in developing pre-reading skills.  You can find it at: www.starfall.com.  Using the mouse is also good exercise for their  fine motor development.

During activity time, I also work regularly with small groups to develop and extend their basic skills (number and letter recognition, name printing, cutting, fine motor skills, etc..)

We read, "Marley Goes to School" and finished finger-painting our names.

Have a good night,

Oct. 2nd Friday

Today we sorted all our names by their beginning letters.  We discovered the letter "S" had the most names: Saer, Suleyman, Sean, and Suber.  We solved a mystery "A" word on the white-board by guessing letters (it was "alligator").  Each of us worked on a very special page for a book you won't see until the end of the year (top-secret!)

For  storytime, we listened to "Puff the Magic Dragon" while following along in the book.

Our school library days will be every Tuesday starting next Tuesday October 6.

Thank you for being so diligent about sending the mail bags every day.  It makes my job here a whole lot easier!

Letter B on Monday.

Enjoy your weekend,

Notes from Rose’s teacher Mrs Noakes

September 21 Monday

The children today made traffic lights and they learned the following poems:

Red says STOP

Green says GO

Yellow says WAIT

even if you're late!

Step on the corner

watch for the light.

Turn to the left,

turn to the right.

If nothing is coming

then start and don't talk

go straight across

be careful and walk!

September 22 Tuesday

Today I presented the children with different safety scenarios and the children with thumbs up or thumbs down would confirm a correct or an incorrect action.  They also made a safety craft using paint.

September 23 Wednesday

Today we talked about safety on the bus and the children made a bus.  We read School Buses Mighty Machines and I'm Your Bus by Marilyn Singer.  The children danced to Chuck Roberts music  'Friends Are Awesome!'

September 24 Thursday

Today we talked about safety on the bus and the children made a bus.  We read School Buses Mighty Machines and I'm Your Bus by Marilyn Singer.  The children danced to Chuck Roberts music  'Friends Are Awesome!'

September 25 Friday

We discussed shapes and where we can find them.  The children were either lacing, stenciling, painting or stamping all sorts of shapes.  Next week we will begin our 'letter of the week' programme.  Please see attachment for our schedule outlining the letter for each week.  Next week is the letter Aa.

Have a good weekend!

September 29 Tuesday

The children had a number of opportunities to practise the letter Aa on either the slates, tracing the letter with playdough, rolling tissue paper and pasting it on the letter or using crayons to do alphabet  rubbing.  At the math centre the children were to match the corresponding number by  placing the correct number of apples ( rolled out of playdough) on  the apple tree. At the writing centre the children used scrabble letters to spell words that begin with A.

p.s. Hi Wei,

They don't do all the activities in one day.  I set up these activities everydayfor the week and children rotate to go where they want.  For scrabble I write the words on paper and they are to find the matching letters to correspond with the word.

September 30 Wednesday

We continued with the same activities and I added a cutting skill activity, and tracing the letter Aa.  We are learning Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin and we danced to Chuck Roberts music.

This is the poem they learned

A way up high in the apple tree

2 little apples were smiling at me

I shook the tree as hard as I could

Down came the apples

Mmmm they were good!

October 1 Thursday

Thursday October 8 - Kinder Information Night

Tuesday October 27 - Valley View Farm Trip (more info. will follow)

Wednesday Oct.  28 - School Photo Day

Today we estimated the number of seeds that will be found inside the apple.  We cut it open and counted the seeds and then we all had a piece of the apple.   We did Air Painting.  I gave each child a straw and a piece of costruction paper with some watered-down paint on each paper.  The children were blowing through their straws to move the paint around.

October 2 Friday

Today we sorted all our names by their beginning letters.  We discovered the letter "S" had the most names: Saer, Suleyman, Sean, and Suber.  We solved a mystery "A" word on the white-board by guessing letters (it was "alligator").  Each of us worked on a very special page for a book you won't see until the end of the year (top-secret!)

Letter B on Monday.

Enjoy your weekend,

I just thought I might mention that Cherry often does not have her mailbag.  If you could be sure to return to school every day, that would be very much appreciated.

This is 柯伟, Mom to 陈静萱 and 柯祥萱. It is nice getting your message and the letter sent from school.

I understand it is a challenge to teach JK students and it seems you did quite well. I just happen to have some suggestions and would like to share with you.

Is it a possibility to let us know what has been taught in class so we can enforce them after the class hours. I did record down what students learnt for this week and you might want to share with other parents as well.

1.       Matching characters:

2.       Reading book 1 from P1- P3

3.       Playing fingers game

低低头, 吃米米;

游游游, 呱呱呱;

勾勾鼻, 做游戏;

4.       Reading characters in the white board

5.       Recess (10: 45 ~ 11:00)

6.       Reading poems on P6 小白兔and P12 你好

7.       Writing character 1 on hand-out sheet.

8.       Singing song ( I was out side the class room and could not hear but I lip-read it as you seemed to sing something like 上窜下跳碰到头)

9.       Listening story-telling( you might want to record the title of the books you read)

I believe that having parents in the classroom doesn’t help as it disturbs students. I believe you are capable enough to control the classroom with all parents absented. Could you please advice all parents to leave classroom when the class starts? I happened to read a posting in CFC forum that one mother complained about he messing during the class hours, and I think we all can help to improving that. JK students should be independent enough to be left in classroom with only teachers and peers. How do you think? What make sense is following up with a letter to let parents know what students have learnt during class hour. How does that sound?

I am not sure if all of the parents could read Chinese, or you might want to enclose some English version of messages. Also perhaps you don’t want to address students as “宝贝”, which makes the message more professional. Just some suggestions.

Let me know your thoughts and again, thanks for teaching!

KeWei

Sept 14

We had a fabulous first day! We spent the afternoon getting used to our classroom routines and practicing sharing the toys and activities among our 19 friends.  Madame Storey came for a visit and taught us some French. She introduced us to a new puppet friend, "Dit-moi tout".

We sang some songs, danced, read "Otto's First Day of School", and learned a new poem:

"I wondered and I wondered

When I could go to school.

They said I wasn't old enough,

According to the rule.

I waited and I waited

I was patient as can be

And now I'm all excited,

It's time for school for me!!!"

Don't forget about our Kinder Social tomorrow (Tuesday) from 3:30-4:30 in the Kinder yard.  There is a reminder in the mailbag today as well.

Have a great evening,

Sept.15

We had another great day!

Today we did a graphing activity with our name tags to determine how many boys and how many girls we have in our class.  We discovered we have 11 boys and 8 girls.

"Creation Station" opened in our class today and the children had fun making many different creations!!  (Creation Station is basically an area in the room supplied with many different art and recycled mp-aterials.  The children can make whatever they like there.  Be prepared to welcome home some very creative treasures throughout the year!!).  On that note, if you have any materials at home that we could use at Creation Station, we would be happy to have them.  Some suggestions are buttons, lace, small material scraps, small boxes or other recyclable materials.  We can make something out of just about anything!!!! You can send them with your child.

We read, "Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come", and practised our new poem, "I Wondered" from yesterday.

I look forward to seeing you at our Kindergarten Social today in the Kinder Yard from 3:30-4:30.

Enjoy the rest of your day,

Sept.16

It was nice to see so many of you at our Kindergarten Social. I hope you had the opportunity to connect with some of your child's classmates and their families.

We are quickly getting used to many of our routines and are having fun meeting new friends and exploring the classroom.  The focus this week continues to be learning the routines as well as trying to learn some of our friends' names.  We looked again at the number of boys/girls in our class and made a different kind of graph using all our names.

We read "The Kissing Hand" (very touching story......Mommies will need Kleenex for this one!), practised our poem, and did some dancing.  The big hit today was "Freeze Dance"!!!

Madame Storey came and they talked about colours in French, especially "rouge" (red).

Thank you for returning the mailbags to school daily.  Thank you, also, to those who have already paid the $20 supply fee.  If you have not returned all the necessary forms (given to you at the Intake meeting) please do so as soon as possible.  I would like to have all forms and money by the end of this week. (Cheques can be made payable to Woodroffe Ave. PS).

Have a great day,

Sept. 17

Today we talked about how each of us is special and different (hair, eyes, size, skin, likes and dislikes).  We read a story called "What I like About Me" then each of us drew a picture of ourselves and practiced printing (or tracing) our name.  I am keeping these at school to decorate our bulletin board in the hall.

We practised our poem, played a name game, and learned a new song: (to tune of Frere Jacques)

"I am special, I am special

If you look, you will see

Someone very special, someone very special

It is ME, It is ME!!!"

We also read "WOW!! School!" .

In French, they continued to work on colours.

The Scholastic Book Orders are due tomorrow.

Have a great day,

Sept. 18

Happy Friday!

Well, we have finished our first week of school and we are all still standing!! We have a wonderful group of children and I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year

Today we reviewed our new poems and songs. We did lots of finger plays and played a name-game with a ball.  Hopefully, your child can tell you the name of at least one new friend. We are still discovering new toys and activities in the classroom and learning to play with/alongside all our new friends.

Madame Storey continued to work on colours, with the focus on jaune (yellow) today.  t

We read "Wemberley Worried" and agreed that sometimes we worry about things too. But, just like with Wemberley, things usually turn out to be fine.

Have a great weekend.  The weather looks good again!

September 14

We had a great day today!  There were no tears and everyone seemed happy! The children are learning the routines of going to their cubby, handing to me any mail from home, sitting at the carpet and looking at the books, playing and sharing the toys, cleaning up, washing their hands, sitting while eating snack, sitting and listening during French.  The children are also responding well  to the whistle sound when we're outside to getting their backpack and lining up at the class designated number.  It was a good day!

Please be reminded we have a kinder social tomorrow from 3:30 - 4:30.  You can bring drinks for your family and finger food to share with others e.g. fruit, vegetables, cheese & crackers.  Please be reminded that due to severe allergies, refrain from bringing any nut products (including traces of nuts).  Please label any homemade food with the ingredients used.  Thank you for your understanding & co-operation!

September 15

Our first unit of study in Junior Kindergarten is SAFETY.  We are reading stories, learning songs and rhymes, and discussing topics relating to safety.

Our song today is:

Red says stop

Green says go

Yellow says wait even if you're late.

See you at the social today 3:30 - 4:30

September 16

Thank you for sending in all the necessary forms and $20 fee for the kinder levy.  If you haven't yet please do so as the office wishes to have all forms in before the end of the month

We discussed today safety on the bus and on the street.  We read a book about school busses and another about  traffic safety. Here is today's poem:

Little Jack Horner stood on the corner

watching the traffic go by,

and when it passed

he crossed at last

and said what a safe boy am I!

September 17

Today we wanted to find out the number of boys and girls in our class.  In our morning class there are 13 boys and 7 girls.  In the afternoon it's 12 boys and 8 girls.  After counting them we made a class graph. Some of the children  today made a picture of themselves to decorate our bulletin board.

September 18

The children have all finished today making a pictue of themselves for our board.  Later some were either sorting transportation vehicles, colouring, painting, solving puzzles, playing in the home centre, building blocks, or the sand box.  After returning from gym we reviewed the songs they learned this week and got ready for playtime outdoors.

Thank you for returning all the forms,

Have a wonderful weekend,

Legislative Page Program

In the late of May I happened to view a report regarding the Page program in a free local newspaper EMC. I told kingsong and he seemed to be very excited. As requested, he wrote an essay as an application and mailed out the application kit before the deadline June 15. In early July I got a phone call saying that Kingsong had been selected to take part in the Page program.  Soon, on Aug 10 I got some messages from the Page Program coordinator, mentioning that a Welcome package has been mailed to Kingsong, and she also send us an electronic document called “Press Release”

The Press Release is defined as “a way for you to share the exciting news of your acceptance into the Legislative Page Program with your community. If you choose to forward this information to your local press (newspaper, local cable channel etc.) you will be providing them with details about your achievement, which they may use to help them develop a piece about your experiences at Queen’s Park. You may choose to add your own contact information to the bottom document before forwarding it. Otherwise, we are happy to answer any requests by journalists for more information about the program and facilitate any requests for an interview with you and your family.
